Stop East London Line privatisation!
NUS NEC notes
1. That the Government, the Mayor of London and Transport for London are using the opportunity of the East London Line extension to privatise the East London Line by converting it from part of London Underground into a private rail line.
2. That this is not the Mayor of London’s only privatisation. For instance, he retendered the North London line rather than keeping it in the hands of Transport for London as he was fully entitled to do. Meanwhile he has attacked the rail unions and called on Tube workers to cross picket lines.
3. That the East London Line privatisation will mean hundreds of workers being forcibly relocated to other parts of the Tube network so that privately-employed workers with worse times and conditions can be brought in, while service quality and safety for passengers and workers are sacrificed to the interests of profit.
NUS NEC further notes
1. That the RMT, the TSSA and Hackney Trades Union Council have launched a campaign against the East London Line privatisation, and for a publicly run East London Line extension.
NUS NEC resolves
1. To support the campaign against East London Line privatisation.
2. To work with the RMT to investigate organising student meetings in East London to campaign against the privatisation and for a publicly owned, publicly controlled, integrated rail and Tube network run as a public service with cheap fares.
